Vint Cerf, one of the pioneers who helped build the internet, has started a new chapter in his career. After twenty years at Google, he recently left the company to become an advisor to Innovation Labs, an organization building tools for AI agents.
AI agents are computer programs that can act on their own, completing tasks without constant human instructions. As more of these autonomous agents start working across the internet, a big question appears: how can anyone know which company an agent belongs to, and whether it can be trusted?
Innovation Labs is proposing a system called DNSid to solve this problem. The idea is simple: link each AI agent to an existing internet domain name, the same kind of address that websites already use. This would let people check where an agent's identity comes from, using cryptographic proof.
Without a shared standard like this, it becomes difficult for AI agents from different companies to interact safely with each other. Questions about permissions and responsibility become much harder to answer. This project is still in an early stage, but it shows how seriously experts are taking the challenge of making the internet ready for a future full of AI agents.
