OpenAI has announced a new program called ChatGPT for Academic Researchers. This program will give free access to AI tools for scientists, mathematicians, and engineers at universities around the world.
The program will start with about ten thousand researchers this summer, including people from the Institute for Advanced Study and other top institutions. By 2027, OpenAI plans to expand access to one hundred thousand researchers.
Researchers who join the program will get access to ChatGPT and other frontier tools, such as Codex. Each accepted researcher can also invite up to four collaborators from the same institution.
OpenAI says that data from these researchers will not be used to train its AI models by default. This program is part of a larger commitment of more than 250 million dollars to support scientific discovery through 2027.
