Many people use an AI assistant on their smartphone every single day. On Android phones, Google's own assistant, Gemini, has always had a big advantage. It could be turned on just by saying a voice command, and it could reach deep into many phone features.
On July 16, 2026, the European Commission, which makes rules for the European Union, announced new requirements for Google. The regulators said that rival AI assistants must get similar access to Android's features.
For example, users should be able to activate a competing assistant with a simple voice command, just like people already do with "Hey Google." These changes are expected to reach users starting in July 2027.
