For the first time, an F-16 fighter jet has flown under the control of artificial intelligence. The flight was carried out by DARPA and the U.S. Air Force, as part of a program called VENOM.
The jet used in the test was not a brand-new aircraft, but a modified F-16 equipped with special hardware and software. These upgrades allow an AI system to take control of the flight controls while a human pilot remains on board.
Before the AI was allowed to fly, engineers first tested the aircraft with a human pilot in full control, to make sure everything worked safely. Only after this step did the team allow the AI to take over parts of the flight.
During the test, a safety pilot stayed in the cockpit and continuously monitored the aircraft. The pilot could switch between manual and AI control simply by flipping a switch.
This flight is seen as a major milestone, because it shows that AI can now control a real combat aircraft, not just a specialized test plane. The program builds on earlier research that first proved an AI agent could fly a jet during a simulated dogfight.
