On August 2, 2026, a new law in California started to take effect. It is called the California AI Transparency Act. The law targets large companies that make generative AI tools.
Under the new rule, any company with more than one million users in California must add a hidden marker to AI-generated images, videos, and audio. This marker is called provenance information, and it shows where the content really came from.
The companies must also offer a free public tool that lets anyone check whether a picture or video was made by AI. In addition, users will be able to add a visible AI label directly on the content they share.
