A group of major technology companies has agreed to support a new open standard called Agentic Resource Discovery, or ARD. The coalition is led by Google, Microsoft, and Salesforce, and it also includes Cisco, Databricks, GitHub, Hugging Face, NVIDIA, ServiceNow, and Snowflake.
The goal of ARD is simple: it lets AI agents automatically discover the tools and resources they need inside a company's software systems. Before this kind of standard existed, developers had to build custom connections for every single software combination, which took a lot of time and effort.
ARD works through simple manifest files that describe what each tool can do. This means an AI agent can look at a company's systems and figure out on its own which tools to use for a task, without a human writing special code for every connection.
Interestingly, ARD is not meant to replace Anthropic's popular Model Context Protocol, or MCP. Instead, the two standards are designed to work together, with ARD acting as a discovery layer that sits alongside existing protocols. Notably, OpenAI and Anthropic are not part of this new coalition, which shows how competitive the AI industry has become.
